Senator DiDomenico Celebrates Benefits of Universal School Meals and Farm-to-School Purchasing in Cambridge
BOSTON — Last week, Senator Sal DiDomenico joined the Cambridge Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Victoria Greer, CPS Director of Food & Nutrition Services Mellissa Honeywood, and Massachusetts Farm to School Co-Director Lisa Damon at the Dr. Martin Luther King School for a local lunch and tour of their school garden. They discussed all things school meals, and how farm-to-school/local purchasing supports the now-implemented universal free school meals in Cambridge and across Massachusetts.
“I spent years fighting for universal school meals in the legislature and now that it has been permanently funded, it is a true joy to see how much it benefits children, families, and local farms across my district and the state,” said Senator Sal DiDomenico.
Massachusetts Farm to School is a non-profit organization that has been working closely with the Cambridge Public Schools over many years as they have strengthened their school meal program and developed a robust school garden program. Senator DiDomenico was able to witness how impactful these programs can be on both students and our local food and farm businesses. The group discussed Senator DiDomenico’s leadership on advancing universal meals in Massachusetts and how it has had clear impacts on student access to healthy foods and boosted the local economy, especially in Cambridge.
